Exclusive Interview: Wolf Music

Interview

Something new and BIG will hit Manchester this weekend; ETC… lands this Friday at the Islington Mill in Salford and in the words of promoter Rob: “ETC…want to provide excellent music for real music lovers, plain and simple.” The new night will be showcasing up-and-coming underground label Wolf Music who over the past couple of years have forged an identity in deep house, disco and soul and are secured firmly on the ‘Ones To Watch’ list. Joining Wolf Music (Stu Clark and Matt Neale) will be KRL, Greymatter and BE – this one is hot hot and not to be missed. Below is a downloadable podcast from Wolf Music member Stu Clark, number 10 in the Stretford Dogs Club brilliant ‘Dogcast’ series – check it out. And in the build up to this Friday, we were able to speak to Stu from the Wolf Music camp to dig a little deeper…

newsicmoos (ns): Hello guys – seems things are really kicking off with Wolf Music. Let us know the goings-on of the past week…

Wolf Music (WM): In the past week we have been getting ready for our Wolf Music presents… party in Brighton taking place on Saturday 15th October, organising a feature on Dazed Digital for Fantastic Man in conjunction with our latest release, WOLFEP009. We also put together a mix for the Stretford Dogs Club Dogcast (as above) and Greymatter was busy with his Mixmag podcast. We have also just launched our brand new website.

ns: Busy times! You’ve described your general sound output as a concoction of genres – how would you best describe it?

WM: It’s a tough one and a question we keep getting asked, in a recent interview Greymatter summed it up quite nicely as ‘new takes on old ideas’. We take a lot of inspiration from the past but we try to keep the music we release fresh and forward thinking.

ns: The name WOLF Music conjures up images of full moons, howling, night time activity – where does the name come from?

WM: The nick-name Wolf was given to me by my label partner Matt the first time we met, it sort of stuck so when we were looking for names it seemed pretty logical.

ns: What did you listen to growing up? What’s influenced you in taking the direction you have today?

WM: Matt and I became friends as we were both really into disco, I was also fortunate to go to the Southport Weekender when I was 18 and I know Matt also was involved in music from a fairly young age I suppose being exposed to the various music has really influenced our taste in music.

ns: How did Wolf Music begin? Who started it? Was it an easy, natural thing to happen?

WM: Wolf Music started around 2 and a half years ago, Matt had been running other labels and had access to the rights of Atmosfear ‘Dancing In Outer Space’ but he felt it didn’t work with any of his current projects. Around that sort of time I had been talking with Matt about starting my own label, he asked if I fancied doing something and Wolf Music was born. We have been working with Greymatter and KRL from the start and recently with our design guys Research-Development. We love the pack mentality.

ns: What is it about the music you sign that has Wolf written all over it?

WM: Matt and I seem to have similar tastes and all the tracks we have signed we have both loved; it seems to have worked for us so far.

ns: What’s in store for Wolf Music?

WM: We are following up our latest release with a full EP from KRL that will drop towards the end of the year then early next year a full EP from Medlar and also from Greymatter, beyond that we are not too sure. Party-wise we have Wolf Music…presents in Brighton on the 15th October, the showcase in Manchester on the 21st then straight back to London the following day for a Wolf Music party at The Queen Of Hoxton. A little break then Get Your Geek On in Oxford on the 15th November as well as party with the Melbourne Deepcast guys on the 25th November. We are also in the process of putting together a run of t-shirts that should be out shortly.

ns: We love that there’s a showcase in Manchester. What can we expect from your showcase at Islington Mill?

WM: We are really looking forward to the Manchester party and there seems to be a bit of a buzz about it which is great. On the night we will be joined by not only Greymatter and KRL but also local BE. Matt and I will get the vibes up early in the night then BE, Greymatter and KRL will all play separate sets playing their signature sound before me and Matt jump back on for some pack to pack action till the end.

ns: Your final words?

WM: I know the whole pack is really looking forward to the party! Come on down, have some drinks, enjoy the music and remember we sound much better when you’re drunk.
